SUMMARY:  WinTec Arrowmaker, Inc. is a defense contractor dedicated to providing outstanding program management, engineering, logistics, and operations support to Department of Defense customers.  The Aircrew Flight Equipment Technician creates special purpose fabrications as well as modifies and repairs articles that are unique in layout, construction, and fit due to figure irregularities, uncommon shapes and sizes, unusual designs, or intricately constructed parts, such as rucksacks, deployment bags, canopies, harnesses, and similar items using experimental fabrics.  The incumbent also inspects, repairs, and packs parachutes and related equipment, performs in-processing inspections on ram-air parachutes systems, and trains personnel.  This full-time, exempt position is located at Cannon AFB, NM.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:   (*Essential Duties)
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Performing fabrication work for quick turn-around special operations missions; reviewing work orders for special purpose fabrication requests to determine product desire and scope of work and prioritizing this work based on knowledge of missions; obtaining information on intended use, particular characteristics, and approximate design and then determining other data pertinent to size, weight, internal dimensions, tolerances, and number of parts; determining the specific technical requirements (such as selection of material, thread, number of parts stress tolerances optimal stitching method, and types of seams); calculating material and supply requirements, determining the availability of material/supplies, and requisitioning required items.*
  • Taking measurements, drawing patterns, creating templates, and calculating dimensional and tolerance configuration of panels, shroud lines, sections, gores, and other segments or portions of parachute components; planning work sequences to assemble and sew parts in accordance with self-determined requirements; operating commercial grade and light duty sewing machines, installing grommets and snaps, and using other equipment and tools in connection with cutting, assembling, fitting basting, stitching, and installing; adhering to all standard practices and processes associated with the manufacturing of articles, such as leather, canvas, and a variety of other fabric materials; repairing, modifying, and altering personal jump equipment such as rucksacks, deployment bags, flight vest, jump suits, and similar items; working with ink and stamp machines for the fabrication of nametags and patches; using chemicals when repairing fabric, leather, etc. and to clean equipment and associated hardware.*
  • Ensuring the proper condition of parachute assemblies to include inspection, repair, packing, maintenance, and documentation; determining inspection requirements and conducting complete inspection of parachute assemblies to detect signs of damage or deterioration; identifying optional repair strategies and performing necessary repairs; repacking both main and reserve canopies and cleaning the main pack and canopy in accordance with technical directives, to include inspecting the work of others during the parachute packing process; suspending parachutes for airing and drying; testing, inspecting, and maintaining automatic release devices and wrist altimeters to ensure correct operation; determining all documentation requirements and ensuring proper disposition of paperwork.*
  • Operating and performing repairs and preventative maintenance on a variety of sewing machines, hand tools, and specialized industrial grade machines, and light-duty equipment; determining the strength of thread and types of stitching to be used; using tools such as knives, scissors, punches, pliers, diagonal pliers, foot- and hand-operated snap fasteners, grommet sets, torque wrenches, and other related tools; operating hand lifts, forklifts, pallet jacks, dollies and platform lifts to relocate heavy equipment associated with parachutes.*
  • Training personnel on packing procedures of the main canopies on the ram-air parachute system, which includes explaining and demonstrating the ram-air packing procedures and performing in-processing inspections during the repack of these systems by other individuals; ensuring documentation requirements are met upon completion of in-processing inspections.*
  • Adhering to safety rules and regulations to maintain a safe and clean work environment; performing clean-up duties, such as equipment, sweeping, straightening, and lining up tools and other property in the assigned area.*
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of two (2) years’ related experience.
  • Knowledge of a variety of common as well as experimental and newly developed fibers, blends, fabrics including their finishes, and performance and handling characteristics such as dimensional stability, abrasion and tensile resistance, and heat sensitivity.
  • Skilled in straightening, folding, and evenly stowing canopy and suspension lines; threading reefing line through canopy hem grommets; installing explosive-charged cutters; folding and attaching pilot chutes to main or extraction chutes; performing needle and thread tacking; and tying surgeon square hitch and other common knots.
  • Experience using testing devices such as altitude chambers and porosity machines to test and adjust aneroid assemblies and canopy durability; micrometers to measure distance between ballistic spreading plates; and various pull gauges to test resistance on ripcord handles and arming pins.
  • Ability to set up and operate, clean, and perform maintenance on light weight, medium weight and heavy duty sewing machines.
  • Knowledge of the sequence of procedures for packing a variety of parachute assemblies, which entails memorizing lengthy and detailed processes, and reading and understanding diagrams and instructions from technical manuals.
  • Ability to prepare patterns or alter or adjust standard patterns to fit special measurements and incorporate special design features and have the ability to make complicated cutting layouts that involve many pattern pieces, fabrics with directional prints, or other difficulties.
  • Skilled in examining the interior mechanisms of automatic ripcord releases for freedom of movement of the power cable and hammer assembly; the proper attachment of the power cable eye, arming cable housing, arming pin, and shear pin, aneroid leakage; proper operation of timer; and security of barrel snap-lock and gasket seal.
  • Ability to understand and explain mechanical systems and to apply that knowledge in assembling, testing, and connecting those components properly.
  • Knowledge of agency, Federal, and international requirements for hazardous and non-hazardous materials and items as well as a general knowledge of standard shop mathematics and safely regulation/procedures.
  • Knowledgeable of Government regulations, manuals, technical orders, standards, and industry publications related to the technical field required to perform all duties listed in this position description. 
  • Experience safely operating hand-lifts, forklifts, pallet jacks, dollies and warehouse platform lifts.
  • Ability to work closely with others and follow written and/or oral instructions.
  • Ability to plan work when detailed specifications are not available.
  • Understanding of AFSOC Special Tactics Squadrons and their mission.

  • Must possess a current Secret Clearance.
